So rather than fight it out with Google, Bing created and claimed a new position in the search engine marketplace…

Two Rapping Economists…the Hayek & Keynes Views
Posted: November 5, 2010 Filed under: Economy, Politics 1 Comment »Obama #44? Think again…he’s Obama #39!
Posted: November 1, 2010 Filed under: Politics Leave a comment »While President Obama is the 44th President of the United States of America, he is not the 44th chosen by the people.
President Obama is only the 39th chosen.
Here’s the reasoning:
There have been 9/43 Presidents who did not complete their terms in office.
- 4 died in office (Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FDR)
- 4 were assassinated (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)
- 1 resigned (Nixon)
Of these nine men, their administration’s Vice-Presidents immediately ascended to the top office; but of those nine VPs only four were again reinstated to the Presidency after the conclusion of their president’s term.
So literally, those four men were again chosen by the people.
Thus, there have been five US Presidents who had only ascended because of death/resignation of their actual President, and who did not return to office.
Vice-Presidents turned Presidents…by default.
1st President NOT Chosen By The People
Known as “His Accidency,” Vice-President John Tyler became President after only a month of President Williams Henry Harrison’s time in office. Harrison caught a cold that developed into pneumonia.
2nd President NOT Chosen By The People
Millard Fillmore became President upon the death of President Zachary Taylor. Upon completing Taylor’s term, Fillmore did not return to the White House.
3rd President NOT Chosen By The People
Andrew Johnson followed the unexpected death of President Abraham Lincoln in his theater box. Johnson did not return after Lincoln’s term was complete.
(The man who had been given the responsibility to guard the president had stepped into a saloon next door to have a drink).
4th President NOT Chosen By The People
Chester A. Arthur was the man who filled in the shoes of his President James A. Garfield, who was shot in a Washington railroad station, in 1881. Arthur completed Garfield’s term only.
5th President NOT Chosen By The People
President Gerald Ford filled in for President Nixon upon his resignation from office August 4, 1974. Ford finished Nixon’s term and was not reelected.
“I assume the Presidency under extraordinary circumstances…. This is an hour of history that troubles our minds and hurts our hearts.”
Is there ANY significance to 39 rulers?
There were 39 kings in the divided kingdoms of Israel (19) & Judah (20) anciently, before their respective monarchies ceased.
And three kings had ruled the combined kingdom of Israel before their split…Saul, David & Solomon.
Does that bring Israel’s total to 42?
Who Will Be The 40th President Chosen By The People?
I have a sneaking suspicion that the 40th President chosen by the people will be a woman.

Moms are Remodeling the House…in the USA
Posted: October 25, 2010 Filed under: About Human Persuasion, Politics Leave a comment »“You…don’t wanna mess with moms who are rising up.”
I heard Sarah Palin say this line on the radio yesterday.
And while there’s a motherly metamorphosis going on, did anybody notice how revolutionary this statement was?
The greatest thing about the USA (and Mrs. Palin’s above comment) is that she can say it, knowing full well that there are only peaceful inclinations in the electorate.
There are:
- women/moms who are freshly engaging political issues of concern to them…and others who don’t like her or what she stands for, or her accent
- and the US men…those standing with her in principle and those working against her on issues
Here in America, a candidate’s remarks don’t lead to physical violence in their bid for office. That is not a major concern in US politics, because Americans peacefully move through elections.
Does Talking To “Moms” Ignore Men?
One question is, has it been a smart strategy for Mama Palin to talk so directly to women in her run for office, and thereby (in a gender sense), possibly alienate men?
I know Female Marketer extraordinaire Michele Miller would probably think Palin has a fine election strategy…as Miller makes money showing businesses how best to attract ONLY the female mind.
Is reaching out to women and not men specifically, really Palin’s strategy? Probably not. Actually I’m sure it’s not.
But after hearing that one line of hers yesterday on the radio, I started considering this post.
I know I tend to not go where lots of women are. I just don’t want a manicure, makeup or a midwife.
Has Palin had this experience at her rallies? More women attendees than men? I don’t know.
I’m sure there are plenty of men who’d respond to the principles she stands for because admittedly…a Republican rally is anything but a gynecologist office.
American Gender Standards
I don’t know a man who doesn’t love women in general. Men love everything about women.
That’s a good standard.
But I also don’t know a man who wants a woman to protect him, as she stands face-to-face with his enemy.
And I know plenty of men who would like a woman to stand next to him (out of harm’s way), while he stands face-to-face with her enemy.
Biblical Gender Distinction
In the Bible GOD is associated with the man, not the woman. If you’re wondering “Why did He choose to do that?” that’s an interesting question. Because after all, He made them both, male and female.
GOD has all qualities of men and women. He is androgynous. The major biblical gender distinction for Him is established immediately in the first verse of the first book, Gen. 1:1.
“In the beginning GOD created the heavens and the earth.”
The Hebrew word for ‘GOD’ is ‘Elohim,’ meaning literally ‘The Strong Ones.’
In the beginning The Strong Ones created the heavens and the earth.
Now bring this introductory line & spiritual principle down to our existence: physical strength readily separates men from women.
But according to the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians 3:28, there is neither man nor woman in Christ; so it is only in an intellectually enlightened culture such as America where we can act like this same kind of gender androgyny holds true for the masses of the world.
But it doesn’t.
In our technologically savvy land, physical strength isn’t as necessary as in other parts of the world.
When more Americans were watching for the harvest moon (and feeding the rest of the world in the 20th Century by the way), the idea of a woman running for President would have been laughable. Was that because physical strength was what helped drive a more agricultural economy?
None of this is to say that in both biblical (heavenly) and social contexts (earthly), men and women aren’t absolutely equal in opportunity…just not in strength.
Will the World Respond to a Woman?
Are men and women equal in the type of mass response drawn? Maybe so here in “philosophically superior USA.” Even still, I don’t hurry to be where lots of women are.
Remember though, a political rally is no nail salon.
What’s just as important (and maybe more so) is what would be the mass world response to a President Palin? Because you wouldn’t even get east of Africa before realizing world response to women is unlike our response…which is filled with years of Western values.
Americans like the idea of enlightening the world in how we value the person, no matter the gender, ethnicity, etc. Does the son of a Kenyan having ALL the power of the greatest military on earth ring a bell? His name is President Barack Obama.
Does History Favor a President Palin?
Having said the above, I still think history favors Palin (or another strong woman) becoming President some day.
Why? Because two of our “brother nations” produced women leadership at key times…like Margaret Thatcher of England & Golda Meir of Israel.
Oct. 12, 1984 Thatcher spoke at a Conservative Conference after the IRA bombed it; she insisted the conference not be canceled, but continue anyway:
“The bomb attack on the Grand Hotel early this morning was first and foremost an inhuman, undiscriminating attempt to massacre innocent unsuspecting men and women…and the fact that we are gathered here now—shocked, but composed and determined—is a sign not only that this attack has failed, but that all attempts to destroy democracy by terrorism will fail.“
And Golda Meir of Israel:
“We don’t thrive on military acts. We do them because we have to, and thank God we are efficient. “
I don’t know how the world of TODAY responds to the force and strength of female leaders like these, at least not without them having strong male counterparts in allied nations (Ronald Reagan & Richard Nixon are they for the above two women).
But when I think of a woman leading, in isolation from some complimentary male power, I can’t help but call to mind Kurt Vonnegut:
“The only missile they can ever think of throwing at anybody is a ball or a bridal bouquet. “
(-Bluebeard, p. 239)
Vonnegut poetically recognized that force and strength aren’t the gift of women.
Gift of Women
What is the gift of women?
Love, beauty tranquility, and insightful intellect are just a few I treasure.
“Women are a decorative sex.”
(-Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, p 51)
Whereas men have a tendency to be more aggressive, loud or even coarse, women are not.
Ladies tend to be far more agreeable, quiet and smooth with language.
Aggression, violence and dominance aren’t traits in the female playbook.
I don’t know what precisely the future holds for women at the role of Commander-in-Chief.
I feel certain she will disembark Air Force One someday.
And the First Gentleman will descend behind her.
“Whether women are better than men I cannot say – but I can say they are certainly no worse.”
-Golda Meir
PS: It’s true I admit it…I do go where women go; I’d go into a local Anthropologie clothing store in a second to look for my wife a dress.
Apparel Triggers Response
Posted: October 22, 2010 Filed under: About Human Persuasion, Appealing to the Individual 1 Comment »A recent news story points to Apparel for triggering an instant human response of the high-profile Juan Williams.
Each of us will be persuaded to respond by another immediately, when we quickly see four traits of that person:
1. gender,
2. ethnicity,
3. age/body type,
4. apparel
The interesting thing is that the first three of these traits are GOD-given.
But it was the fourth trait, Apparel, that caused Juan Williams alarm.
The fourth trait is most typically the first trait when we humans get to choose how others will perceive us.
Juan Williams lost his job yesterday at NPR for discussing his nervous response to obviously attired Muslims on airplanes.
But it gets more complicated because some Muslims valued his particular above commentary on the topic.
In real word application of these kinds of observations, the bottom line is this:
People aren’t sure exactly how they should respond to physical human traits.
Fear of sexist and racist accusations have taken the first two most obvious human virtues completely out of the discussion. And of those two, ethnic generalizations seem to be far more volatile a topic than do gender generalities.
It’s almost as though, good Americans should NEVER respond rationally to their own gender or ethnic stereotyping.
But really…shouldn’t these most basic human traits and our observations of them somehow serve to simplify our response, not to complicate it?
Guilty for Avoiding Uncertainty
Juan Williams is guilty of expressing his uncertainty out loud. But avoiding uncertainty has always been the desire of humanity throughout our long history. Is it now considered some kind of condition one has?
Uncertainty comes not by sex, gender, age/weight in the USA…but by attire first.
We can be comforted and feel certain about another, just by what one wears.
Likewise we can become uncomfortable and uncertain about another in the same way, by just looking at their clothes…all other things being neutralized.
In some ways, your apparel links you to the traditional American culture or it doesn’t.
American Culture
The USA is surely the first & only nation in history to grant freedom to slaves (save maybe England), while granting equality to women and who also allows you to worship as you see fit.
The culture of the USA remains steady, even after power changes hands in our government. A new government every two, four or eight years isn’t a sign of upheaval. New governments are ushered in and out of the White House presidential cycle after presidential cycle.
And there are no gunshots and no killing because of it.
Maybe there’s some hollering, bickering and aggravation but as a nation we continue onward in peace.
So if your dress code doesn’t symbolize what most are already used to in this country, then your dress can disrupt the peaceful inclinations of others. You should expect your attire to to trigger unfavorable responses…because of its unfamiliarity.
Remember who chooses your attire. Not GOD, but you.
The question of the Juan Williams episode is really, “Who is most responsible? The person who sees the non-traditional attire, or the person wearing the nontraditional apparel?”
This is not a black & white question. It’s gray, and as such it should be taken on a case by case basis.
Maybe someday I could further expand on my instant response triggers inside the pages of Cialdini‟s Liking and/or Social Proof chapters in an upcoming edition of his book Influence.
My Conclusion about the book Influence: by Dr. Robert Cialdini
Posted: October 22, 2010 Filed under: Peruasion Book Review | Tags: Juan Williams, Persuasion Psychology Leave a comment »Dr. Cialdini simplifies the vast topic of persuasion with his “six weapons of influence.”
And by distilling each weapon, he brings clarity to much of your life.
For instance, I was emotionally changed by a trip to Disney World; and having read Influence I understood that even if I understand what is happening to me, it still works.
It was the Disney World employee’s attention and service to my family that was so effective.
Right away upon arrival, our bags were removed from my car and taken to be delivered to my room.
Then my family was freely upgraded to the “Concierge Suite.”
It’s true, I never saw the original room we had booked, but it was still a powerful experience to get “upgraded” right away at Disney.
And even though the “Concierge Suite” upgrade wasn’t a room limited to only VIPs, it sure felt like it!, but that was really beside the point.
Symbols and actions of honor toward my family were awesome and overwhelming.
Already we felt good about all of this.
And then as we were walking through the Grand Floridian Resort and up to our room, every employee stopped, waved and said to my four-year old daughter, “Hi Princess.”
So is it any wonder I plan to go back again and give them more money for treating us that way?
Having read the book Influence, Disney World calls to mind Cialdini’s Reciprocation, Liking and Scarcity principles most immediately.
My Quick Summary of Influence
Dr. Cialdini’s book Influence gives the reader a good understanding of persuasion.
But the book is not specifically about which words and phrases to write to get your reader to take action. Rather it is the authoritative source of general wisdom about persuasion.
And Cialdini often takes a measurable and scientific approach, but there’s no need to let that scare the non-scientist. Because his book clearly and credibly tells you what’s happening, and how.
This is the best source around to reference before convincing your academic/scientific/business/political/religious circle of students/colleagues/prospects/voters/followers/whomever.
Because if you need to get them to agree and say “Yes,” to you, then this is the classical read for you.
Its principles are powerful.
In the end, Cialdini’s book Influence will reconfirmed things for you, and gave you many more new insights.
How much does Influence Cost?
